Jockey's prize for 1963 Ascot Gold Cup, won by Lester Piggott on Twilight Alley, silver gilt miniature two-handled cup with lid, hallmarked Garrard & Co. Ltd, London 1963, engraved THE GOLD CUP, ASCOT 1963, LADY SASSOON'S TWILIGHT ALLEY, on black plinth, 13 by 7cm., 82gr., slight dent in rim of cup Twilight Alley was a fragile chestnut, over 17 hands high, bred at the stud of Sir Victor Sassoon after whose death in 1961 he raced in the colours of Lady Sassoon. Susceptible to injury, Twilight Alley's racing career was restricted to just four outings, one of which was the prestigious long-distance Ascot Gold Cup of 1963 which he won by a length under Lester Piggott.Provenance: from the Lester Piggott Collection.
