George Male 9ct gold Arsenal 1937-38 Division 1 League Championship medal

Hammer Price:
£9,000
Estimated Price:

£9,000 - £12,000

George Male 9ct gold Arsenal 1937-38 Division 1 League Championship medal, the obverse inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, CHAMPIONS DIVISION 1, the reverse inscribed Arsenal Football Club, 1934-35, C.G. Male, in original fitted case

The above medal has been incorrectly inscribed for season 1934-35, this medal relates to the 1937-38 season. In the 1937-38 season, Arsenal secured their 5th League championship win with 52 points, winning the title on the final day, Wolves finishing runners-up with 51 points

The above medal was offered in the Christie's Scotland Football Memorabilia auction which included The George Male Collection. However, the medal was withdrawn and subsequently reoffered and correctly catalogued as the 1937-38 League Championship medal. The hallmark date letter supports this. The medal is wrongly inscribed for 1934-35 season.

We are satisfied that the medal which was sold in Christie’s sale on June 2005 (lot 11) was definitely George Male’s Championship medal from 1934/5 and that the lot we are offering herewith is definitely his 1937/8 Championship winning medal.

George Male won championship medals in 1932-33, 33-34, 34-35 and 1937-38 but his medals were not inscribed until later on.

The three in-a-row medals were on display at Arsenal Museum.
