Photograph and manuscript letter relating to lawn tennis in Bermuda 1877 and 1880,
comprising: a period sepia-toned albumen photograph, 14.5 by 18.5cm., mounted and titled in ink “Bermuda - April 1877, depicting a group of 13 individuals, the lower margin with ink legend identifying the sitters that included (standing back row, second from right) Colonel William Laurie Morrison acting Governor of Bermuda, the other subjects comprising Mrs Morrison, Miss Sharples, Mr Elliot, Miss Whiting, Miss Eliot, Marion Sharples, Mr Leverson, Miss Smith, Mrs Elliot, Dick Elliot and Mr MacMullen and Miss Rosevelt [sic], creasing to mount, image unaffected; at letter signed by Bessie Gray of Clermont, Hamilton Harbour, Bermuda, dated Sunday 23rd May [1880], addressed to Mr Egerton and recalling playing tennis with him at Clermont and explaining that the lawn court there was in a poor state and that she had accepted an offer by Lady Laffan to play at Mount Langston where the court ”is in grand order"; together with a group of manuscript letters a group from Frances Emily Gladstone to her future husband George Le Clerc Egerton (later Admiral Sir George), dated 25th March, 30th March, 3rd April and 5th April 1882, the lawn tennis content includes Miss Gladstone writing of her participation in a mixed doubles match against Captain Forrest and the Irish champion Miss [May] Langrishe
