£500 - £700
Lawn Tennis: a group of legal documents relating to the Renshaw Twins dated 1870 & 1871,
sold with a hand written essay researched and written by the seller based on the content of the documents titled “The Renshaw Twins, Family Wealth, Sporting Triumphs, Family Tragedy”
The twins Ernest & William Renshaw were five times Wimbledon Doubles Champions between 1884 and 1889. William Renshaw also won the Singles title seven times between 1881 and 1889, a number only equalled by Pete Sampras and surpassed by Roger Federer. Ernest also won the Singles title in 1888.
The documents in particular deal to secure the future family inheritances of the Renshaw twins born in 1861.
Tragically Ernest died aged 38 from the effects of carbolic acid, although it was never proven if this was intentional or not. William too was to die at the relatively young age of 43 from epileptic convulsions.
