The helmet is part of a larger commission by Mickalene Thomas, who also designed the custom race suits and race car livery, creating a ground-breaking visual identity that blurs the lines between performance gear and high art, while spotlighting women in the sport and the studio.Thomas is an internationally acclaimed artist known for her electrifying, rhinestone-studded portraits that layer collage, colour, and texture to reimagine femininity, beauty, and strength. Her work reimagines classical art history while making space for contemporary narratives, and this project brings her signature style into a new dimension: the racetrack.Thomas is currently the subject of a major traveling retrospective, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, which began at The Broad in Los Angeles and toured to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, the Hayward Gallery in London, and is now on view at L’Abbatoir in Paris - underscoring her global impact and artistic legacy.The Zoë Helmet exemplifies Thomas’s bold visual language.
