Rare and important silver-gilt and enamel casket presented to J.J.Bentley, from The Football League in 1909, chased and engraved all-over with scrolling foliage, the detachable lid enclosing a silk-lined interior and monogrammed in enamel to one side with the date 1888 and 1909 to the other, the frieze centred by a shield-shaped enamel plaque enclosed by a laurel wreath and flanked on either side by a shaped rectangular raised panel engraved with the member clubs of the 1st Division and 2nd Division in the year 1909, including Newcastle United, Everton, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Woolwich Arsenal, Preston North End, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bradford, Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Derby County, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Gainsborough Trinity, Fulham, Leeds City etc, the reverse with two further raised shaped rectangular panels, one inscribed This Casket and Enclosed scroll was presented to Mr. J.J. Bentley President of the Football League by the Members in Commemoration of the 21st Anniversary of its Formation, June 8th 1909, the other inscribed 1888 Original Clubs Preston North End, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, Accrington, Everton, Burnley, Derby County, Notts County and Stoke, the sides mounted with relief panels depicting the Division 1 Championship Trophy and the Division II Championship Shield, the angles with fluted Corinthian pillars, on rectangular base and maroon velvet-covered leather plinth, lacking scroll, finial to lid and a plaque to the reverse, gilding rubbed, damages, 21cm high, 56cm wide
