Lot 5

Mr T. Worton's colours bag and the colours carried by his top class handicapper of the 1890s Victor Wild, the leather colours bag inscribed to the brass lock T. WORTON, LAMBOURN, BERKSHIRE; the colours comprising a black & gold striped jacket with red collar & cuffs, and a black & gold quartered cap Victor Wild won the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in 1894, and consecutive runnings of the Great Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park in 1895 & 1896. Often burdened with big weights, Victor Wild was also runner-up in the Royal Hunt Cup in 1895 & 1897, and in the Great Jubilee he finished third in 1897. Mr T Worton owned and trained Victor Wild. Worton operated on a very small scale and Victor Wild was therefore a horse of great fortune for him. The winnings enabled Worton to build the Waltham House Stables in Upper Lambourn in 1898. Later occupants of the stables were the Rothschild family trainers F C Pratt (1919-1939), A J Wood (1940-1946 & D F Watson (1947-1957). Waltham House Stables was renamed Lethornes in 1964 when Doug Marks trained there. Today's occupant is Michael Blanshard.
